Travel: Osmeña peak what to expect tips & tricks

The island of Cebu holds such fascinating and beautiful landscapes, which are quite unique to this area of the world.

Osmeña Peak is one of the highest mountains in Cebu and it is about 1,013 meters above sea level. However, contrary to what many people have said, the highest peak on Cebu is actually Mt. Manunggal in Balamban, which stands at 1,097 meters.
From the summit of Osmeña one can take in dramatic views of numerous  green peaks with sea views off in the distance.

Chocolat hills or Osmeña peak?
It looks a bit like Chocolat Hills in Bohol (the island just to the west of Cebu) but the peaks around Osmeña are pointier.

My starting point was from the town of Moalboal and we payed 1500 PHP per motorbike roundtrip. There is a 30 PHP per person entrance fee to hike to Osmeña peak, and the trek takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. They trail is well-marked and easy to follow.

Getting To Osmeña peak

We hired a Habal habal, which is a motorbike with driver, to Osmeña Peak and that was an uncomfortable trip!
It takes one and a half hours to reach Osmeña from Moalboal. To be more precise, it is a one-hour road journey and half an hour through a rough road.

There were 3 of us on one bike and by the end, our asses were really stiff and numb from the ride!
If you are on a budget, this is the way to go. But if you have the extra cash, it is worth driving a car instead. Along the way you will travel through scenic twisting mountain roads.

The Best View in All of Cebu

From the peak, the most picturesque view is towards Moalboal to the north and slightly west.
The morning hours (especially sunrise) are great for photo taking, as the light is better than in the afternoons and evening, when the sun begins to set.
For less crowds, try to visit during the weekday, as weekends are busiest.
The summer months of April to May are optimal for good weather and it is warmer in the mornings.

Tips and Tricks

This trip could easily be done in half a day. The hike up to Osmeña is not strenuous if you are reasonably fit.
If you crave a full-day adventure, follow up with a visit to Kawasan Falls for another half day. It is also possible to hike directly from Osmeña Peak to Kawasan Falls.
If you choose to also visit the falls, but sure to bring a swimsuit!
You can even camp at Osmena Peak overnight for about 50 PHP per night, if you bring your own tent and supplies.

Even though it is no problem to hike up Osmeña peak on your own, if you can, hire a guide who can tell you lots of interesting facts about the area.
You can decide at the last minute if you want to hire a guide, as they are available once you get to where you pay the entrance fee. Hiring a guide is also a good way to help the community.

The best thing to do is make a day of it and see both Osmeña Peak and Kawasan Falls.
You will be glad you did!
